What is this place?
This is the DungeonLight Library (also sometimes referred to as DungeonLight, Dungeon Library, DungeonLight Archives or DL), a place where fanfiction writers and readers alike are welcome.
What kinds of fanfiction do you accept?
We accept all kinds of Harry Potter fanfiction, in all ships and eras, in any lengths over 1000 words (fics under that word count we classify as drabbles, and you're welcome to open a drabble thread for yourself in the Coffee Cauldron in our
forums. Poetry is exempt from length limitations, however.). If you've written a Harry Potter fanfic and wish to share it, you are welcome.
But you have some limitations, right?
We won't accept stories with explicit content. Explicit content in this context mainly refers to scenes of sexual nature – but may also mean excessive violence. We won't reject your story simply on the basis of a love scene – that's what the Sexual Situations warning is about. However, such scenes should not be gratuitous or the point of the story. If you're not sure whether your story has explicit content, feel free to
contact the Dungeon Keepers for advice. Also, see
The World Has Let Me Down – Dealing with Rejection section for recommendations on making your story fit our bill.
So, apart from explicit sex and violence, you accept all sorts?
Yes, indeed. We're tolerant like that.
Ooh, what about crossovers?
We're not
that tolerant. Jokes aside, DungeonLight Library is a strictly Harry Potter fanfiction website, so all stories you will find here are firmly rooted in the Potterverse.
Gotcha. So where are all the stories?
You can get to the stories by clicking the Library link underneath the main banner, or the Stories link in the right menu. There are more ways to get to the stories – and if you really got all the way down to the help page without finding your way to the library, try starting from the top again.
Also, our
guide to the library will help you find your way around once you're there.
That's ALL? SomeOtherFanfictionWebsite.Com has X hundred authors and Z thousand stories!
Any library starts with a few scrolls on the shelves before it grows. Why don't you submit something?
Okay, let's say I want to submit a story. What should I do?
The story submission process is described in detail
here. But you can start with registering.
Aw, do I really have to register?
If your plans include nothing but reading fanfics, you don't have to register. However, you need to have an account if you want to leave comments, save stories and authors into your favourites to find them again easily, and submit your works, of course. Registering is fast and easy – do it
here!
So I've registered, so what?
Welcome aboard! Your Author Page should be pretty straightforward to get the hang of. Feel free to check out the
Field Guide to Your Author Page, as well as
guides to submitting a story.
I submitted a story, but it doesn't show up anywhere!
Your story won't show up in the library until it has been validated by one of the moderators. However, you should be able to see it in your Author Page area, where you can edit it or delete it if you changed your mind. Please keep in mind, though, that if you edit your story, the submission time will be reset. So if you've waited a few days, then edited your story, the moderators will think it's been submitted on the day of the editing (sorry, we're just daft like that).
What if my story has multiple chapters?
At the moment, we allow submission of multiple chapters at the same time. Do try to submit them in the right order, however. Also, you can delete any chapter at any time – but keep in mind that if a story submitted to the queue has no chapters, it will be rejected, and you will have to resubmit. Read more about chapter-less stories in the
submission guide.
What are all the moderators doing? I'm going to grow old before my story is validated!
Not unless you take an Ageing Potion. Our standard validation time is under one week. If your story has been in the queue for over a week, feel free to give a nudge to any moderator that you feel should be working harder. See
Vox Clamantis section on recommended ways to contact one of the Keepers.
I sent a PM to a moderator through the forum. I also wrote them an e-mail, sent a text to their phone, left a beeper message, and am currently camping outside their house with a large poster featuring the title of my story. When will they get back to me?
Now that you've made your problem known in a number of perfectly unobtrusive ways, give the
unfortunate moderator a little time to react to it. Contrary to the popular belief, the Dungeon Keepers are human and require rest and food on a slightly regular basis.
Oh, and while you're camping out there, response time will decrease drastically if you fetch some coffee. (And if you make a trip to Starbucks, the moderators will fight over who gets to validate your story.)
My story disappeared, but I got no rejection letter!
If the e-mail you specified during registration is valid, the letter HAS been sent to it. (In fact, for your convenience, our system is set up in a way that a moderator cannot reject your story without a letter being sent!) Chances are that it ended up in your spam folder (we're aware that e-mail services don't often think of us very highly). Check the spam/junk/bulk folder of your inbox, and if it's there, add DungeonLight to the list of safe senders to avoid the confusion in the future.
How many stories can I put up on my shelf?
There's no limit. The more, the merrier.
How many chapters can a story have?
No limit here either. As long as each chapter is under ten thousand words.
What's with all this green? Don't you have any other colour schemes?
Not yet – but in some time, we plan to introduce a few alternate skins, as well as nice little button allowing to change them.
I just had a brilliant idea! Why don't you people add a feature that does…
You want to make a contribution? Wonderful! Post your suggestion in the
forums.
The website is doing something weird. Instead of doing what I tell it to, it's swearing at me in strange languages and complaining about errors.
Even though we've run extensive tests on the library, nothing is one hundred percent foolproof, and even computers have bad hair days. If you get any error messages, please let us know. Including a screenshot or copy of the error message will help us hunting down and exterminating the error promptly.
I've read this whole section and my question isn't here! How do I contact somebody?
(Okay, to be honest, I just skipped all the way to the bottom because I'm too lazy to read through all this wall of text.)
Your honesty is appreciated. The easiest way to ask your question is the
forum. Read more about contacting the moderators in
this section. However, if your question is indeed somewhere in this list, be prepared to be redirected right back to it.
